Lunges health

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching we thought it was a great time for a little self-love, which is why we’re sharing 10 simple (maybe some not so simple) ways you can improve your lunges health for easier breathing and better quality of life.

  • Exercise

Regular workouts especially cardiovascular workouts can help increase your lung capacity by up to 15%.  Our Lung capacity naturally decreases as we age which can result in lowering our oxygen intake, and even impair our metabolic function.  Working out to increase your lung capacity results in oxygen being transported throughout the body at a more efficient rate. Take things up a notch by exercising underwater, or at higher elevations. This will require your lungs to work harder to supply oxygen to your blood.  You may also consider using a breathing resistance exerciser like Expand-A-Lung. Similar to working out underwater or at higher elevations the variable resistance will force your lungs to work harder to supply oxygen to the blood stream.

  • Change Your Diet

A few tweaks in your diet can make a big difference. Increasing your water intake for example helps keep your lungs hydrated and the mucus in your body flowing. While it sounds gross mucus needs to be the right consistency for the cilia to move out allowing it to keep pollutants and toxins out. Vegetable high in carotenoids and foods high in omega 3 fatty acids are also great for your lung health (as well as your overall health).

  • Quit Smoking!

This one may be the toughest to kick but remember smoking is the # 1 cause of lung cancer. “Within five years of quitting smoking, study participants experienced a 13% reduction in the risk of death from all causes, a 47% risk reduction in heart-related deaths, and a 27% reduction in the risk of death from stroke.”-WebMD

  • Get Your loved ones to Stop Smoking Inside

Second hand smoke can also increase your risk of lung cancer, and other lung related health issues. If you struggle to get your loved ones to quit at least get them to take it outside. The unhealthy habits do not need to affect your health as well.

  • Protect Yourself Against Infections

There are many things you can do to avoid respiratory infections: washing your hands frequently, keep your flu vaccine up to date, even practicing good oral hygiene helps keeps germs out of your mouth that could lead to respiratory infections.

  • Avoid Air Pollution

Cities with high traffic and dense populations tend to have higher levels of air pollutions. Try to avoid extra pollutants by staying indoors as much as possible on days that are highly polluted.

  • Check Your Tap Water for Arsenic

This may sound strange but drinking water with high levels of arsenic can lead to lung cancer, and there may be traces of arsenic in your tap water. Arsenic is odorless and tasteless so it’s hard to detect without testing. Western states like California, Nevada, and Arizona are more likely to have traces of arsenic.

  • Breathe More!

This may seem like an odd request as breathing can be an involuntary function. However, it can also be voluntary. Deep breathing techniques send greater volume of oxygen to your lungs. You can practice deep breathing techniques like alternate nostril breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, or use the Expand-A-Lung to practice deep breathing exercises.

  • Switch To Vaping

Vaping is NOT good for your lungs. However, if you’re unable to quit smoking this is a slightly safer alternative? “Science proves that e-cigarettes are less toxic compared to conventional cigarettes. It is easier to adjust nicotine levels with a vaping device. People focused on gradually phasing out nicotine altogether can easily adjust the content of nicotine until they can vape without it.”-SOFTWhttps://expand-a-lung.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=2338&type=image&TB_iframe=1

  • Clean Your Indoor Air

Using Home Air Purifiers can help remove toxins and indoor pollutants to the air we breathe inside our homes. Using a whole house air purifier can lower the risk of long-term respiratory ailments. This type of purifier works by having a fan that draws clean air in, and exhausts polluted air out.

Love yourself more! Happy Valentine’s Day!
