Getting Started & Daily Training

Everything you need to know before your first workout. From how Expand-A-Lung works to beginner tips, recommended routines, and proper resistance settings.

We are the original creators and inventors. Since 2004, we have helped happy customers inhale, exhale, and respire more efficiently. Since then, many brands have come and gone. While there are many imitators today, why not choose the original, authentic brand that bears the name Expand-A-Lung?

  • Yes, completely. Novices can easily begin at the minimum setting and adjust the difficulty as they improve, courtesy of the built-in adjustable resistance dial. You maintain a normal breathing pattern against a mild restriction. And comfortable for people with zero previous history of respiratory training. If you happen to experience dizziness during your initial trials, just dial back the resistance and cut your session times short until your body gets used to it. Furthermore, every purchase bundles a free instructional e-book, “A Practical Guide to Mastering Your Breath” , step-by-step guidance, and warm-up routines tailored for newcomers.
  • Deep breathing serves as a great warm-up, but it lacks the ability to build actual muscle power. The Expand-A-Lung features a variable resistance dial that forces your respiratory muscles to push against a physical load, forcing them to grow stronger over time. That added resistance is the main difference between a true lung workout and just taking deep breaths

Expand-A-Lung is a premium, compact Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) device designed to strengthen your breathing muscles. It works by providing adjustable resistance as you inhale and exhale, acting like dumbbells for your diaphragm and core breathing muscles. With regular use, it increases breathing capacity, endurance, and overall breathing efficiency.

Please strictly follow this official conditioning protocol for your daily routine:

    • Reps: 10–15 breaths per conditioning set.
    • Frequency: 2–4 sets spaced out through the day.
    • Athletes: Complete 1 extra set immediately before any workout or competitive sport.
    • Pro-Tip: Consistent daily use builds respiratory stamina over 2–4 weeks.

Before Workouts: Warm-Up

  • Timing: Use the device immediately before your training session or competition.
  • Routine: Complete 1 extra set of 10–15 breaths.
  • Benefit: This primes your respiratory muscles, wakes up your diaphragm, and prepares your lungs for high-intensity exertion.

After Workouts: Recovery & Conditioning

  • Timing: Use the device as a standalone respiratory workout later in the day, rather than immediately following intense exercise when you are still heavily winded.
  • Routine: Complete 2–4 sets of 10–15 breaths spaced throughout the day.
  • Benefit: Training your breathing muscles while your body is at rest builds long-term respiratory strength and stamina over 2–4 weeks.

For optimal results, we recommend training for 3 to 5 minutes, once or twice a day. Most users see a noticeable improvement in their breathing endurance and vital capacity within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily training.

The device features a heavy-duty, adjustable resistance valve. To increase the difficulty as your lungs, get stronger, simply turn the valve dial to restrict airflow. To lower the resistance, turn the dial the opposite way. We recommend starting at a comfortable baseline and gradually increasing the resistance over time.

  • Breath Training for 5-10 minutes through the mouthpiece during a session simply lets you move more air against resistance than if there was a breathing device for your nose. This would make it more difficult to train the muscles more effectively.
  • To get the full resistance benefit, all air must flow exclusively through your mouth and into the device. If you find yourself accidentally inhaling or leaking air through your nose during a session, you can gently pinch your nostrils closed or use a standard swimming nose clip until your body adapts to purely oral breathing loops.
