Top 6 Tips to Stay Cool in Summer Traffic

 In traffic tips

School’s out and everyone’s got some place to be for the weekend. Before you plan your next road trip mentally prepare yourself for the traffic jam, and take a few steps that will keep you cool in the summer heat.

Tip #1: Gas up!

This one should be a no brainer but be sure to fill your tank before you hit the road. It also doesn’t hurt to check you tire pressure and make sure your car is in tip top shape.

Tip #2 Pump the jams

Create a play list. It’s hard to get upset when you’re jamming out to your favorite tunes. Maybe even throw in some meditation music in case things get a little heated. Podcasts and ebooks are excellent options as well. Listening to a compelling story will make a long drive and even bumper to bumper traffic a breeze.

Tip #3 comfort-hanger+hydration=smooth riding

Get comfortable. If there is ever a time for yoga pants (outside of yoga class) this would be the time. Embrace it! It doesn’t hurt to have some of your favorite snacks waiting for you in the car, and ofcourse be sure to have plenty of water. Insulated bottles are great as they can keep your drink cold for hours. Added bonus using reusable bottles cuts down on waste from single use plastics.

Tip #4 Waze for daze

It’s always a good idea to take a look at a map before you start our road trip. Consider alternate routes that will be helpful in case of unexpected delays.  Be sure to keep a phone charger in your car incase you need to use your cell phone navigation.

Tip #5 Be prepared for all kinds of weather

While sleet and snow may be doubtful; heavy rain and thunderstorms can be just as dangerous while driving. Drive with caution and be sure your tires, brakes, and headlights are in good working condition.

Tip #6 Just Breathe!

Breathing exercises can be a great way to calm the body and mind when traffic has you reaching your boiling point. Long slow inhales, and long slow exhales work best to calm the nervous system. Using a breathing resistance exerciser like Expand-A-Lung can also be very helpful. The addition of the resistance on the inhale and exhale makes it easier to elongate the breath which has a very calming effect.

Being comfortable and prepared for the unexpected will make your next road trip a breeze; but when all else fails just breathe and remember you will eventually reach your final destination.
